Campbells Snuff Shop (DH 13b)

Obv: A Turk's head. JAMES with a small ornament under. PAYABLE AT CAMPBELLS SNUFF SHOP.
Rev: A snuff jar labeled 79, date 1795. SAINT ANDREWS STREET EDINBURGH.
Edge: Plain (not in collar)
Provenance: Ex - Spence, Fawcett/Litman collections. Purchased by me Jan. 2007 from ABC Coins & Tokens.
Notes:

Campbell was a tobacconist at 79 St. Andrews Street. He moved from No. 79 to No. 37 St. Andrews in 1796 as evidenced by his tokens of that date (the number on the snuff jar denotes the address).

A Turk's head was a popular symbol of the tobacconist's trade. The JAMES referred to on obverse was the diesinker and manufacturer.
